About This Grant

The Indigenous Rangers programme (formerly Working on Country) funds Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ranger groups to combine traditional knowledge with conservation science to manage and protect their land, sea, and culture. Rangers carry out biosecurity monitoring, fire management, feral animal control, cultural site protection, and environmental surveying.

Funding is provided through the NIAA and supports employment, training, and on-Country activities. Ranger groups are typically based in remote or regional communities.

Eligibility

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations with connection to Country and capacity to deliver ranger activities. Typically requires partnerships with land councils, NRM bodies, or environmental agencies.

How to Apply

Land management plan, evidence of Traditional Owner support, partnership agreements, and capacity to employ and support rangers.

Barayamal Tip

The ranger programme is one of the most successful Indigenous employment programmes. If you are starting from scratch, connect with an existing ranger group to learn how they were established. NIAA regional staff can advise on new group feasibility.
