Opinion: Are coal mining companies harbouring racists?

Opinion Are coal mining companies harbouring racists

As the 2024 NSW Aboriginal Land Council Election nears, despite racism and discrimination concerns in Aboriginal communities, it’s never been properly addressed during Charles Lynch‘s 8-year reign as Councillor for the Northern Region.

But ignoring real issues is NOT something I’ll do.

Which brings me to Aaron Treay, with whom I’ve had concerns before about potentially targeting Aboriginal people through his Meta Facebook Group called “Gunnedah Neighbourhood Watch”, colloquially and controversially dubbed as the “Gunnedah Stalker Watch” for stalking Aboriginal people and posting potentially defamatory posts, mostly under Meta’s anonymously feature (tough guys).

But I did query the two major mines in Gunnedah if they employed Aaron, and a representative from Idemitsu Australia Pty Ltd. (Boggabri Coal Mine) said no, while the other major mine Whitehaven Coal, never confirmed or denied it.

However, to be fair to Whitehaven, at least they responded to my formal complaint and supposedly fired one of their employees (yes, they confirmed that this guy worked there) who said the following to an Aboriginal woman in Gunnedah.

I’m gonna wrap a f***n bar around you and your piece of shit kids heads you scabby c**n b**h I hope you get t boned by a truck and die painfully for you giving birth to such mongrel kids you a*****e – Luke Mitterer, former (?) employee at Whitehaven Coal (Maules Creek)

Note: I beeped out the swear words since LinkedIn has professional standards… but not talking about this would be delusional and unprofessional, in my opinion.

And the only reason this has come up is because Aaron Treay seems to be up to his old tactics, trolling and targeting Aboriginal people. Still, in this case, it’s me, seeming to want to publicly show his amusement at my Candidacy for the 2024 NSWALC Election and trying to make a difference by laughing at my post/work…

Now, I’m not saying Aaron is a racist, but he has targeted Aboriginal people in Gunnedah before (yes, I have proof). He seems to feel comfortable trolling Aboriginal people in public, so why can’t we talk about it in public?

But anyway, I would like to see the mining companies in Gunnedah take more care and time with the people they employ or give contracts to, more anti-Indigenous and anti-racism educational programs, and more accountability for the negative impact they have on First Nations, e.g. environmental damage, housing crisis from the massive influx of mining workers to a small rural town, etc.
